A North East university will play a key role in staging the latest addition to the region’s running calendar. Northumbria University, Newcastle, is a host partner for the first HogmanHOWAY 5K, which will take place in Newcastle on New Year’s Eve. The university’s new chancellor, architect and TV star George Clarke, has given his backing to the new event, encouraging staff and students who live locally to take part.
The brainchild of North East athletics legend Steve Cram, the HogmanHOWAY 5K is sponsored by Develop North PLC and is being organised by Events of the North, in partnership with Newcastle City Council and North East Mayor Kim McGuinness. Starting and finishing at the Civic Centre, the flat route will take runners past many of Northumbria University’s key sites, including its main sports centre – Sports Central – and a loop around its City Campus East buildings. The HogmanHOWAY will also showcase numerous other iconic Newcastle buildings.
George Clarke comments: “The HogmanHOWAY is a fantastic addition to the New Year’s Eve celebrations in Newcastle and Northumbria University is delighted to host the event. It’s a great opportunity to show off some of our great sites and buildings, alongside those other landmarks that help make the city such an interesting and appealing place.”
Steve Cram adds: “We’re very grateful to George and all of his colleagues at Northumbria University. Their support has been instrumental in making it possible to stage the HogmanHOWAY 5K. Our runners will be in for a treat, taking on a flat course that provides some excellent sightseeing along the way.”
Around 2,000 people are expected to take part in the first HogmanHOWAY, with many making early start on their New Year’s resolutions to get fit and raise money for good causes, such as the event’s official charity partner, The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.
