Active adventures in Kielder & Northumberland for a bank holiday escape

Looking for a refreshing, active bank holiday getaway in the North East? Kielder Water & Forest Park in Northumberland offers a perfect blend of adventure and natural beauty. From trail running, to stargazing, here are some fun bank holiday activities for all the family to enjoy this stunning region to the max.

1. Recce the routes of Britain’s most beautiful marathon

The Altra Kielder Marathon takes runners on an almost entirely off-road course around northern Europe’s largest man-made lake, Kielder Water. The event, celebrating its 15th year in 2025, also features a 10K, half marathon and junior races, offering an action-packed weekend of running adventures. Before the scenic trails get busy with runners in October, take a walk or run into the historic forest to understand why it’s nicknamed Britain’s most beautiful, and maybe you’ll be inspired to sign up!

      2. Scout out the setting of The Northumbrian Triathlon

Kielder is also home to The Northumbrian half and full iron-distance triathlons in June. It’s the ultimate test of endurance, set in the wild beauty of Kielder. Swim in crystal-clear water, cycle through remote moorlands and run forest trails surrounded by pure silence and stunning views. It’s as tough as it is breathtaking – with the full-distance being the only triathlon set entirely within a dark sky park, and one of the UK’s most unique endurance events. But before the race gets underway, drive the roads, visit the water side and investigate the forest to understand why this is the ultimate challenge.

      3. Explore The Northumbrian Ultra Trail Runs

This summer, trail enthusiasts will explore new routes in the inaugural Northumbrian 50K Ultra and 20K trail runs in June. These UTMB Index races will explore newly created routes through Kielder’s wild landscapes, including the outstandingly beautiful Lonesome Pine trail. As a newly created trail, the route beckons adventurous individuals to explore.

      4. Cycle the Lakeside Way

The 26-mile Lakeside Way encircles Kielder Water, providing a multi-user trail perfect for cycling. Whether you’re an experienced cyclist or a casual rider, this trail offers breathtaking views and a chance to immerse yourself in nature.

      5. Try Kielder Waterside activities

Unauthorised swimming, diving, water sports, inflatables or just a quick cool down in Kielder Water is strictly prohibited, but Kielder Waterside is a hub for various activities, including kayaking, paddleboarding, archery and even Krazy Karts. After an active day, unwind at the spa or enjoy a meal at the on-site restaurant.

      6. Stargaze at Kielder Observatory

Situated within Northumberland International Dark Sky Park, Kielder Observatory offers unparalleled stargazing opportunities. Attend an event to learn about constellations, planets, and the wonders of the night sky in one of the darkest places in the UK.
