For the first time ever, the legendary Northumbrian Triathlon weekend is opening up to trail runners – and it’s bringing two spectacular new races to the party.
Introducing The Northumbrian Ultra Trail Runs – a 48K ultra and a 27.6K trail race – both set to take place in Kielder, Northumberland on 28-29 June 2025. Here’s why this event deserves a prime spot in your summer race calendar:
- All-new trails in a wild and remote playground
Kielder has long been known for its raw beauty – but thanks to Forestry England, runners will now get access to an entirely new section of trail: the Lonesome Pine Trail. Recently unveiled and open to the public for the first time, this route is as untamed and picturesque as they come, with some of the finest views of Kielder Water.
- A first for Kielder ultra running
While triathletes and marathoners have raced here for years, this is the first time ultra and trail runners will have the spotlight, with dedicated distances. Whether you’re an experienced ultra runner or stepping up from shorter trail events, this is your chance to be part of a special new addition to Kielder’s sporting calendar.
- UTMB Index-qualifying races
Dreaming of Chamonix? You’re in luck. Both races are officially UTMB Index events – meaning you can earn points towards qualifying for the world’s most prestigious trail races:
- 48K Ultra (UTMB 50K category)
- 27.6K Trail (UTMB 20K category)
As well as being held in a stunning setting, these races provide a convenient stepping stone for anyone with ambitions to race on the biggest stage.
- Start and finish beside the lake
Both routes begin and end at the stunning Kielder Waterside, providing a festival-style hub with incredible views, great vibes and lakeside relaxation post-race. You’ll finish your adventure shoulder to shoulder with triathletes, cheered on by a buzzing crowd.
- A spectacular 50K route for the ultra brave
The 50K Ultra opens with a stunning 25km loop along the new forest trails, before joining the triathlon run course for two epic laps of Bull Crag Peninsula. The scenery is incredible, the trails are varied and the final laps bring you right into the heart of the race village, where the crowd support gives you that extra push when you need it most.
- A punchy 20K option that doesn’t skimp on views
Not quite ready for 50K? The 27.6K trail race is the perfect shorter-distance challenge, with 400m elevation and just as much natural beauty to embrace. You’ll still hit key highlights of the course and finish with that same unforgettable lakeside finale.
- A fully supported adventure
From chip timing and on-course nutrition to race t-shirts, finisher medals and a well-stocked goody bag, your experience is taken care of so you can focus on performing your best and enjoying the day.
- Part of an epic outdoor weekend
Trail runners will share the spotlight with some of the UK’s toughest triathletes as part of the Northumbrian Triathlon Weekend – an event known for its wild setting, supportive atmosphere and passionate outdoor community. There’s something inspiring about being surrounded by people pushing their limits – on the bike, in the water and on the trails.
